July 2010

Woke up aqround 3:30am after 5 to 6 hours sleep. Not so shabby. Got a shower in and relaxed for a wee bit.
We loaded up what we needed to bring on the March of Death today. Left the hotel around 5am Drove around for a wee bit looking for a place to get a cuppa. Nothing open this early in Leavenworth. Not even the gas station. No harm. Headed over to The Snow Lakes Trailhead and waited for our shuttle to arrive.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010002.jpg picture by irelandsking

After a wee bit it arrived. It was the same woman as last year. Eileen. A great lady who talked the local history and about her 4 kids and 14 grandchildren. She drove us up to the Stuart Lake Trailhead. We gave her the $45 including the tip for driving us.

We leave off on the trail just before 6 am.
Head off down the trail that is more familiar to us now.

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010006.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010010.jpg picture by irelandsking

We cross the first bridge after nearly 36 minutes of walking.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010013.jpg picture by irelandsking

Get to the Colchuck Lake turn off after 59 minutes
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010027.jpg picture by irelandsking

Then over the little bridge on the trail after 62 minutes.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010030.jpg picture by irelandsking

We reach the 5,000 foot level at 1 hour and 27 minutes of walking.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010032.jpg picture by irelandsking

and after 1 hour and 59 minutes Colchuck appears through the trees.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010040.jpg picture by irelandsking

We walk down along beside the lake
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010048.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010044.jpg picture by irelandsking

over the boulders
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010053.jpg picture by irelandsking

and get to the end of the lake after 2 hours and 34 minutes from the start.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010058.jpg picture by irelandsking

We continue on around the bottom over the two boulder fields and the marshy area,
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010064.jpg picture by irelandsking

The monster is now well in sight. “Aasgard Pass” this part of the trip with just over one mile assent and we will gain nearly half of our total 4,500 foot elevation gain on the hke today in this short fierce climb.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010060.jpg picture by irelandsking

We drink our Power Shots and Glucose here after 2 hours and 55 minutes of walking.
We contimue up using rocks and the like to pull us up in many areas. We trodded on and on. Slow but sure and got past the water fall. Still going up and up and up.

A wee look back down to Colchuck from where we came from.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010079.jpg picture by irelandsking

After 1 hour and 30 minutes of this we made it up to the top off the pass which enters down into the Enchantment Basin. At 7800 feet this will be the highest elevation on this trip.  This was quicker than we did it last year by about 15 minutes and we felt quite strong at this point. But with still about 8 hours more of walking ahead of us the feeling of glee is not as it should feel.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010085.jpg picture by irelandsking

So to this point we have been hiking 4 hours and 23 minutes. Tranquil Lake is fully snowed over so we continue on for a bit. We had our lunch here last year.

This part of the trek over the coming hours is my favourite part. We walk on and on.

We do stop and eat at the 4 hour and 52 minute mark.

Then on and on and on.

I personally do not think the photos can do justice for what my eyes see up here. This may be a kind of heaven on earth really. But anyway keep on looking.

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010109.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010109.jpg picture by irelandsking

Dark clouds are begining to loom in behind us.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010109.jpg picture by irelandsking

There was a chance of thunder showers for here today. There was a lot more snow on the trail compare to last year too. It made the walking a wee more difficult at times.

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010109.jpg picture by irelandsking

Inspiration Lake appears down below. Now making our way down here can be a wee tricky.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010109.jpg picture by irelandsking

We make our way down to it after 5 hours and 43 minutes into the hike.

We reach Perfection Lake after 6 hours and 6 minutes.

This is about half way through in time for us.

Perfection Lake pours into Sprite Lake which we reach at the 6 hour 23 minute mark.

Following the river down we cross over a log.

We arive at Leprechaun Lake at 6 hours and 46 minutes

We stop for another snack at the end of this lake.  After less than 10 minutes we are off again.

More goats come out to say hello
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010273.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

Further on we reach Lake Vivian and meet another family of goats. Goats a plenty.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

We reach Vivian at 7 hours and 24 minutes
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

LakeVivian.jpg picture by irelandsking

We spot the Snow Lakes way down below and make our way down towards them. This by far is the most dangerous area going down in the trip. Just a long way down over huge rocks.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

They have anchored rebar into the rock in some places to get a better grip.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

At 8 hour and 11 minute mark the thunder and lightning started. Flashes above our heads and loud loud thunder.

We continue
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

All of a sudden a hail stone storm opens up. The hail is bigger than peas and hurts like hell. I have never ever been in a storm this bad.
The camera is wet in an instance.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010146.jpg picture by irelandsking

at 8 hours and 29 minutes we reach Upper Snow Lake
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking

Now wet as hell we make a very fast speed down along the lake on the hail covered trail
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking

The hail floated on the huge puddles and you often couldn’t tell where they were. Needless to say my right foot was well wet now from mistaking them for solid ground.

We made it to the dam that seperates the Upper from the lower Snow Lakes at 9 hours and 5 minutes.
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking

The water was over ankle deep here and I now have two waterlogged boots with over one third of the hike in miles left ahead of me.
I put on my jacket before the crossing to try and warm up. My fingers and arms were icy at this point.

We pick up the pace a wee more from here. And off down the trail we go. The storm lets up at the 10 hour walking mark. We made it down along to the first foot bridge at 10 hours and 12 minutes. The weather was a wee warmer now and the hands were begining to loosen up.

MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking

On down we go
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking
and up a wee
MarchofDeaththroughTheEnchantmentsJuly2010341.jpg picture by irelandsking

then down at the bottom we cross the second bridge over the little canal and cross the river a couple of minutes later for the last time at 12 hours and 48 seconds..
E.jpg picture by irelandsking

Now we have to hike uphill to the Jeep and we reach the end after 12 hours 2 minutes and 46 seconds of hiking.

Nowhere near as tired as last year when we did this on July 12th. We remove the socks and boots and put on the Tevas.

Back to the hotel we go. Hot showers and we head over to Safeway to get provisions for dinner. Eat in the room

Lay on the bed for a minute and lights out.

Woke early and put more mud on the walls.  Headed down to the job in Queen Anne. Gary showed up to help. We finished the last few openings. The scaffold crew took down the scaffolding. We went over to Taco Bell for a wee and eats.
Back to work and we painted the new siding and the old to look like we weren’t even there. Cleaned up the site and headed off home.

Back home packed the bags for the hike tomorrow. Then headed off on the road for Leavenworth. We stopped at the Mongolian in Monroe for dinner.

Then over and checked in at the hotel in Leavenworth.  http://www.derritterhof.com/ Room 256. Then we headed into town for a walk around and an ice cream from Cold Stone.

Back and watched Elvis On Tour on the telly.

Woke up early and since I had no hope of working on the remodel tonight I went to work on taping and mudding the wall.
Off to Dunn Lumber for supplies. Then down to IV West. Gary showed up later.
Worked some more on the put back of the building. Got a good bit done. Went to Taco Bell for a cola.

Down to Blackstock for backer rod.

Finished out the day and went off to the home.

A quick change and out the door to the concert. “The Great Big Sea” at the Woodland Park Zoo.
No opening band made it great as they will play for the 2 plus hours on their own. Marcie, Phil, Megan and Natasha were there when I got there. Later Mitch. Brenda and the girls came by and Beth with her girls. A big gang of us.

The band came on and played a great concert. I walked around and took a few photos. I met Sean McCann’s brother Ian there. I got a DVD from him with a cd to boot. A nice lad. He told me his family came to Newfoundland in 1810 from County Armagh.

Now what?

Woke up in not so good form today. The first baddish day in a couple. No harm though.
I knew I wouldn’t have time to work in the living room tonight so I screwed off the drywall in the morning before I left.
Work
Gary and I putting back the building.
Taco Bell for my cola lunch with the toilet stop to boot.
Got done what I had planned so it was a good day. Left late again.
Got the scaffolding coming down on Friday morning at 8 o’clock.

Home Depot on the way home.

Dinner and dessert.

Walked down to the Maple Leaf social in the park. Met and chatted with Tony on the way.
Once there we went for the free ice cream ala Ace Hardware-Maple Leaf.
MapleLeafGathering015.jpg picture by irelandsking

Next met Harold and we chatted finance for a while.

Then down along talking to all our local residents along the way.

Then ran into Shay and Keith. Talked to them for another while.
MapleLeafGathering006.jpg picture by irelandsking

MapleLeafGathering007.jpg picture by irelandsking

We decided not to stay for the outdoor movie.
MapleLeafGathering016.jpg picture by irelandsking

Walked back home and now I should think about packing or something.

Woke up early and laid on Season 4 of It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia.
Up and off to work.
Called my Lawyer back in Ireland about Bodyke. As of now all is well there. I will check back in two weeks,

Gary and I working again. Jim, James and Steve from the other office. I hadn’t seen Steve ion a long time. We had a good old chat.

Right before lunch we got the go ahead to start putting back the openings. Gary and I went over to Taco Bell for lunch. Well I had a cola there and ate my fruit and crackers.

Repaired the columns in 307 and 309. Checked the garage for paint and then I headed off for material. I stopped into Dr. Steve for the visit. We had a great old chat. A nice lad he is. Gave my blood and continued on the way to the materials at Dunn.

Home

Dinner and dessert.

Loaded up a pile of garbage and too it away.
Rewired the outlet for the fridge. This act has been 12 years in the making.
Then remover the wood squares from the rest of the wall.
Livingromremodel009.jpg picture by irelandsking

and hung the drywall.
Livingroom002.jpg picture by irelandsking

Now I could nap or sleep even.

Up in good form and off to work early.
Talked to Pete and Aine on Skype for a bit. Then headed down to IV West Condos for an investigation. My first time back here in near four years.
Parked at the job waiting for cars to leave so I could snag a couple of spaces for the scaffolding truck to park while they were doing their work. No such luck. We parked in a parking lot at the back of the building for the day.
Gary showed up to help me. James and Jim from CAI were there. We opened up all the way until 1 o clock then lunch. Back at it until near 5pm. Gary worked out great on the job. He is a good man to have around.

Home

Dinner and dessert.

On to a bit of work in the living room.
livingroomremodel002-1.jpg picture by irelandsking

livingroomremodel002-1.jpg picture by irelandsking

After posting here yesterday I went to work on the fireplace wall.
livingroomremodel003.jpg picture by irelandsking

Removed the mahogany tiles from the wall.
livingroomremodel003.jpg picture by irelandsking

livingroomremodel003.jpg picture by irelandsking

Then knocked the firewood holder box down.
livingroomremodel003.jpg picture by irelandsking

And the job for tonight was to install the drywall. I covered over the dated window too. Now it is hidden in this wall. I will have to do the diningroom side later.
LRoom004.jpg picture by irelandsking
Hopefully tomorrow I will get to taping and mudding the drywall. Lets see.

Booked the tickets to Spain and France tonight.

Now I will find something else to do. Good night.

Woke up early. Bollixed for a bit.
Then over to feed the puswas for the last time. Did the chores there and back to a fine breakfast ala Natasha.

Insulated the front wall. Then hung up new drywall and did the taping along with the first coat of mud.
house004-1.jpg picture by irelandsking

house004-1.jpg picture by irelandsking

Next we headed over to Thornton Place to see “Inception”

house004-1.jpg picture by irelandsking

This was a movie that could have lost you anywhere along the way but they did a great job of explaining as you went along with it. Truly a good movie.

Home
Put a second coat of mud on the wall.

Then walked down around 75th for an all time speed record for us. It took us 53 minutes and 7 seconds.

Had a great pizza dinner ala Natasha, Dessert ala me.

Removed the mantle and some of the mahogany tiles that were on above the fire place too. The big light shelf up top and the one door next to it to boot.

Now journal and next rest.
